My Little Monster (Children's Workshop) | State of Motion 2019: A Fear of Monsters

Description
My Little Monster (Children's Workshop)

Developed by Mike Chang and Sarah Choo, teachers in the Art Elective Programme (AEP) at Nanyang Girls’ High, My Little Monster is a craft workshop for children aged 8-12 years old, facilitated by upper secondary school students.

From mechanical monsters to wire mesh monsters, participants will create their own little monsters. Every monster created in this workshop will be unique to its maker. At the end of the workshop, each participant will be invited to introduce their monster and the inspirational story that led to its creation.

My Little Monster reminds us that every monster is special and loved.

Mike HJ Chang is a Taiwanese American artist and educator in fine arts. Chang’s practice is based on a curious examination of conventions of seeing. His work often gives the impression of an alien observing and understanding a landscape for the first time. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts. Chang currently resides and works in Singapore.

Sarah Choo Jing is known for her interdisciplinary approach to photography, video and installation. Her work depicts identifiable moments and characters within contemporary urban society suggesting a plethora of private and often solitary narratives. Choo completed her MFA at the Slade School of Art in London in 2015. She lives and works in Singapore.

Both instructors are teachers in charge of the Art Elective Programme (AEP) where students are exposed to various types of mediums, crafts and art history discourses. As part of the curriculum, students are encouraged to participate in community art projects where they apply what they learn in the classroom in meaningful ways. Mike and Sarah have worked with a group of secondary 3 students to conceptualise and facilitate My Little Monster.
